Priest Suspected of Mozambican Bishop’s Murderer
The suspects are a Catholic priest, a security guard, and a gardener employed at the bishop’s residence. They appeared before an investigating judge for several hours of questioning.
Following the hearing, the court ruled that they should remain in preventive detention while investigations continue.
Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) confirmed that Bishop Afonso died a violent death and that an AK-M assault rifle was used in the attack.
Investigators have carried out forensic medical examinations, ballistic analyses, DNA testing, and other technical procedures.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific evidence linking the suspects to the crime or provided a full account of how the attack was carried out.
The arrests have raised questions because initial reports suggested the attackers came from outside the bishop’s residence. Unanswered questions include whether others were involved and the motive behind the attack.
