Catholic shrine vandalized and restored in Ceuta, Spain. A small Catholic shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and Fray Leopoldo near Tiro Pichón in Ceuta was found badly vandalized this week. Religious images and devotional objects were damaged or displaced. The perpetrators are unknown. Following reports of the destruction, Ceuta’s municipal authorities sent workers to clean the site, repair the damage and restore the shrine.

Franciscan Father Ibrahim Faltas reflects on the tragedy in Gaza after a building previously damaged by an Israeli missile strike collapsed shortly after midnight on September 16. At least 21 people died. He focuses in 'L’Osservatore Romano' on a mother and child found dead in an embrace. Fr Faltas adds that "about 100 people remain beneath the massive piles of debris; more than 20 have already been pulled out, and over half of them are children."

A bomb exploded outside the Greek Orthodox cathedral in Hama, Syria. The videos from the scene show the aftermath inside and outside St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hama after a bomb exploded on 13 September, on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The blast shattered windows and damaged the church and nearby cars, but no one was killed or injured. Syrian authorities opened an investigation. No group has claimed responsibility.
Last Sunday, there was another bomb attack on a church in Syria. This time, however, no one was killed or injured. Security camera footage shows a masked man placing the bomb underneath a car parked directly in front of the Greek Orthodox St. George’s Cathedral in Hama. The bomb exploded later that evening. September 14 (the day after the attack) is traditionally celebrated in the Greek Orthodox Church as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. There was no church service taking place in the cathedral at the time, which likely saved many lives. However, the church was damaged in the attack, and many windows were shattered by the explosion. Children were playing in the church courtyard nearby, but they too were unharmed. Nevertheless, the shock runs deep. Christians see the attack as a clear signal directed against them. Leo XIV has not responded to an audience request for the Roman rite pilgrimage to Rome. The organisers of the pilgrimage “to the See of Peter” in late October requested a papal audience nine months ago, reports Edward Pentin on his Substack-Account. The request was made in a letter signed by two lay members of the organisation. It was personally delivered by Bishop Athanasius Schneider when he met Leo XIV last December. In the same letter, the organisers asked for permission to celebrate a Pontifical Mass at the Altar of the Chair in St Peter’s Basilica, as had happened several times in the past. After repeated pleas for a response, the Secretariat of State on 7 August declined permission for the Mass in St Peter’s Basilica. No reason was given for the decision. New West Virginia bishop expands traditional Latin Mass. The bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, announced that the extraordinary form of the Mass will be celebrated on Sundays at a new site beginning tomorrow, in addition to the two current churches in which it is offered. Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala also announced that the traditional Latin Mass will be offered in a fourth church, whose location is to be determined.
Leo XIV’s new Brazil bishop promotes Amazonian Rite valuing indigenous peoples’ “visions of God.” On September 18, Leo XIV appointed Bishop Antônio Fontinele de Melo, 58, as Bishop of Rio Branco, Brazil, until now the bishop of Humaitá. Long CEB involvement Bishop Fontinele is mainly known for his involvement with the Basic Communities (CEBs) of Brazil. They are emphasizing Scripture, lay participation, community organization and social action. He was Porto Velho’s Pastoral Coordinator (2005–10), helped organize the 2008 “Dozinho” Basic Ecclesial Communities gathering, served as the Brazilian bishops’ Northwest Region adviser to the Basic Ecclesial Communities (2009–12). The Society of St. Pius X and the sedevacantists do the same. With Vatican Council II rational, we begin with Ad Gentes 7 which says all need faith and baptism for salvation. We then observe that hypothetical and invisible cases mentioned in Nostra Aetate are not objective exceptions for AG 7 or the Catechism of the Catholic Church (845, 846, and 1257). The artist, Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner, was inspired by the story of the man’s grandfather, Wolfgang Langenmantel, a German nobleman, and his wife Sophie. The couple’s lives were falling apart and they were on the verge of separation. In an effort to save their marriage, Wolfgang decided to get advice from a Jesuit priest, Father Rem, who lived in a monastery near Augsburg, Germany.
