Today, Leo XIV issued the Motu Proprio Mutua concordia, setting out “an orderly procedure for the removal of a Patriarch from office by the Synod of Bishops” of an Eastern Catholic Church. The new rules allow a synod, for a grave reason, to ask a patriarch to resign. If he refuses, the bishops can proceed to a secret vote on his removal, in which at least two-thirds of the synod’s voting members must take part. The synod does not have the final word.
